SCSD2 Fifth St. Greenhouses

Garden Leader

Shayley Cooper // Greenhouse Coordinator

The Fifth Street Greenhouse, operated by SCSD2, is a hub for educational and community initiatives focused on horticulture and sustainable agriculture. Formerly belonging to Holly Seed Company, the facility was donated to SCSD2 by the Homer A. Jr. & Janet Scott Foundation. In 2024, the school district opened the repurposed greenhouse to provide students with  local food, as well as hands-on learning experiences in plant sciences.

Greenhouse Coordinator Shayley Cooper is leading leafy green production at the facility, with approximately 70 pounds of leafy greens weekly going to school meals during the school year, and community organizations such as The Food Group during the summer.

The greenhouse also serves as a practical classroom for Sheridan High School's horticulture class, where students engage in hydroponic cultivation and sustainable farming practices. The program emphasizes natural pest control methods, including the use of beneficial insects like ladybugs, and plans to expand into growing a variety of vegetables in raised beds.

Community partnerships have been instrumental in the greenhouse's development. Organizations such as Rooted in Wyoming have collaborated with the district to enhance the facility's impact on local food security and education. Rooted in Wyoming led field trips to the Greenhouse, and sprouted thousands of seedlings the children helped plant for school gardens.

In December 2024, T-Mobile awarded a $50,000 Hometown Grant to support the greenhouse's mission of fostering local connections and educational opportunities. This funding is set to enhance the greenhouse's capacity to serve both students and the broader community.

The Fifth Street Greenhouse stands as a testament to SCSD2's commitment to experiential learning and community engagement, providing students with valuable skills in horticulture while contributing to the health of the Sheridan community.
