Henry A. Coffeen Elementary

While this garden had a slow start, they have BIG future plans! Garden meetings initially began in 2017, but was delayed due to Covid. In 2021 the first fruit trees were planted, fencing was installed, and raised beds were added.

In 2022, the Coffeen Garden had 58 unique non-student volunteers and 70 student volunteers for 350 volunteer hours. Approximately 100 plants and 8 types of seeds were planted. Throughout the growing season, 3 terraces were built with donations from Mullinax and the Sheridan County Landfill. These were planted with native plants donated from Sheridan College, Wyoming Wildlife, and Piney Island Natives.

A native pollinator area was created during a First Interstate Bank workday and Wyoming Wildlife shared a presentation on adaptation and helped plant a native grassland area.

The After School Program contributed over 175 hours in the garden, including classes on seed starting, vermiculture, seed stratification, adaptation, and composting; this summer, the garden harvested 25 lbs. of produce which were used during ASP lessons for students to sample different foods and for a cooking class with students.

Future plans include a pollinator garden, shade garden, sensory garden, geodesic dome, and teaching pergola.

The long-term vision for the garden has students and staff working together to design garden areas that serve as educational outdoor spaces that also are comforting and safe for students to reset and ground themselves during high stress or difficult situations.
